Ben Vane, an easy weekend hill from Glasgow

No city in Britain is better placed for the mountains than Glasgow. Within an hour or so of the city you can be at the foot of a Munro, and the whole sweep of the Loch Lomond and Southern Highland hills is comfortably within range for a weekend — or even a long evening. These three itineraries build from a gentle first outing to a bigger trip north, all starting from Glasgow.

Weekend 1: Your first Munros (easy introduction)

If you are new to the hills, start close and start gentle. Ben Lomond, on the eastern shore of Loch Lomond, is the most southerly Munro and one of the friendliest — a clear path, big views and an hour's drive from the city. Save it for a good forecast and treat it as a half-day.

For a second day, Ben Vorlich above Loch Lomond or a return to the area for a quieter hill makes an ideal follow-up while your legs learn the work. Our best Munros for beginners guide explains why these particular hills suit a first weekend, and the first Munro walkthrough covers exactly how to plan the day.

Weekend 2: The classic Southern Highlands two-dayer

Once you have a few summits behind you, the Crianlarich and Tyndrum hills offer some of the best value in Scotland — big mountains, an hour and a half from Glasgow. A strong weekend pairs Ben More and Stob Binnein — the two highest peaks south of Strathtay, climbed together — on the Saturday, with Ben Lui and its shapely neighbour Beinn Dubhchraig on the Sunday. That is four substantial Munros in a weekend without straying far up the A82. Stay in Tyndrum or Crianlarich to cut the morning drive, and see the wider Southern Highlands guide for more pairings.

Weekend 3: A bigger trip into Perthshire

For a weekend with more variety, head north-east into Perthshire, around two hours from Glasgow. The Ben Lawers range packs several Munros into one high traverse, and the isolated cone of Schiehallion — one of the most recognisable hills in Scotland — makes a perfect shorter second day. Add Meall nan Tarmachan nearby and you have a rich weekend in some of the gentlest, most rewarding country in the Highlands.

Making it work from the city

A few things make Glasgow weekends run smoothly. Beat the Saturday-morning traffic on the A82 by leaving early or staying out the night before. Many of these hills are also reachable car-free on the West Highland Line, which removes the drive entirely. And because mobile signal disappears the moment you leave the main road, download your maps and route notes before you go — the Munros app keeps offline maps, routes and summit forecasts for all of these hills on your phone, and logs each peak as you go, so your weekend tally builds itself.
