Stirling occupies one of the most strategic spots in Scotland — the historic gateway between the Lowlands and the Highlands — and that makes it a surprisingly good base for Munro bagging. The southern edge of the Highlands begins just up the road, putting a fine selection of Munros within an hour or so of the city. Here are the best.
The closest Munros
- Ben Vorlich and Stùc a' Chroin. The prominent pair above Loch Earn, roughly an hour from Stirling, make a classic and rewarding round — the most obvious big-hill objective from the city.
- Ben Lomond (974m). The most southerly Munro, above Loch Lomond, is easily reached from Stirling via the Trossachs — a clear tourist path and huge views. See how to climb Ben Lomond.
- Ben Chonzie (931m). A gentle, benign hill near Crieff — one of the friendliest Munros in the country and ideal for beginners.
A little further: Crianlarich and the Trossachs
- Ben More and Stob Binnein. The towering Crianlarich twins, around an hour and a quarter away — a big, steep, superb round. See how to climb Ben More and Stob Binnein.
- The Crianlarich and Trossachs hills. An excellent cluster of Munros around Crianlarich and Tyndrum, all within comfortable reach — see our Crianlarich and Trossachs guide.
- The Arrochar Alps. West towards Loch Lomond, a rugged group of hills famous for their character. See Munro bagging in the Arrochar Alps.
Why Stirling works as a base
Stirling's strength is its central position and connectivity: it's close to the Southern Highland Munros, well served by road and rail, and within easy reach of both the Trossachs and Loch Lomond. For anyone in the central belt starting out on the hills, it offers a superb spread of beginner-friendly and bigger Munros without long drives.
