Driesh and the Angus glens near Dundee

Dundee may sit on the Tay estuary, but the mountains are closer than many of its residents think. The Angus glens — Clova, Doll and Esk — cut north from the city into the southern Cairngorms, giving Dundee a fine, quiet selection of Munros within an hour to ninety minutes' drive. Here are the best within reach.

The closest: Driesh and Mayar

Driesh (947m) and Mayar (928m) above Glen Doll are the obvious first choice — a popular pair of Munros climbed together in a satisfying round, roughly an hour and a quarter from Dundee. The classic circuit takes in the dramatic Corrie Fee, a National Nature Reserve, and the peaceful glens of Angus. Straightforward and rewarding, they make an ideal introduction to the hills for anyone in the city.

The Angus glens and beyond

  • Mount Keen (939m). Scotland's most easterly Munro, reached from Glen Esk — a rounded, benign whaleback on good tracks.
  • Lochnagar (1,155m). The magnificent Deeside mountain of cliffs and corrie loch, about ninety minutes north via the glens — one of the finest hills in the eastern Highlands. See how to climb Lochnagar.
  • The Glen Shee hills. The Glenshee ski centre, reachable via Blairgowrie, offers the easiest multi-Munro days in Scotland thanks to its high start.

The wider Perthshire hills

West of the city, highland Perthshire opens up plenty more within reach — Schiehallion, the Ben Lawers range and others — giving Dundee walkers access to some of the most beginner-friendly Munros in the country. See our best Munros near Perth and Perthshire bagging guide.

Why Dundee is a good starting point

Dundee's Munros are mostly quiet, straightforward and beginner-friendly — the Angus glens see far fewer walkers than the honeypots of the west, so you can build fitness and confidence in peace. Good road access up the glens and a spread of easy-to-moderate hills make it an excellent base for a first foray onto the Munros.
