How to Climb Ben Wyvis: Routes, Times & the Ridge

Ben Wyvis is the great isolated whaleback that dominates the skyline north of Inverness — a 1,046-metre mountain in Ross-shire that stands well apart from its neighbours, so it feels far bigger than its neighbours and gives enormous views. Despite its size it is one of the most accessible big Munros in the Highlands, thanks to an excellent path.

The standard route from Garbat

Almost everyone climbs Ben Wyvis from the car park at Garbat, on the A835 north of Garve. A well-built path climbs through forestry and then up the steep shoulder of An Cabar, the mountain's southern top, before easing onto the broad summit ridge. The Munros app lists the route and its distance — a moderate day of five to seven hours — with the car park pinned and the forecast stored offline.

The summit ridge

Once on top, Ben Wyvis becomes a gentle giant: a wide, mossy ridge of springy woolly-hair moss leads north to the summit, Glas Leathad Mòr. It is a glorious high-level stroll on a clear day, with views to the Fannichs, An Teallach and, on the best days, the far north-west. The gentle summit belies how exposed it is to the weather — there is no shelter up there.

A protected mountain

Ben Wyvis is a National Nature Reserve, and its summit plateau is a breeding ground for dotterel and other ground-nesting birds. Stick to the path, keep dogs under close control, and tread lightly on the fragile moss — it is part of what makes the hill special.

When to go and what to pack

Ben Wyvis is a rewarding walk year-round, but the broad plateau holds snow well into spring and becomes a serious, featureless place in winter cloud — treat it as a full winter hill then. In any season carry warm layers, waterproofs, food and a map, and check the mountain forecast; the summit is often far colder and windier than the car park.
