How to Climb Ben Vane: Short, Steep & Near Glasgow

Ben Vane is one of the smallest Munros in Scotland at just 915 metres — barely over the 3,000-foot mark — but do not be fooled by the modest height. This Arrochar Alps peak packs an enormous amount of steep, knobbly climbing into a compact hill, and it is a firm favourite for a short, sharp day within easy reach of Glasgow.

The route from Inveruglas

Ben Vane is climbed from Inveruglas on the A82, on the west shore of Loch Lomond. The walk follows the private access road towards the Loch Sloy dam before a path breaks off and heads straight up the mountain's steep south-east ridge. The Munros app lists the route and its distance; while the mileage is modest, the ascent is relentless.

Small but steep

What makes Ben Vane memorable is how steep and stepped it is. The ridge rises in a series of rocky knolls and short bands, with the odd easy hands-on move, so you are constantly climbing with little respite. It is not technically hard and needs no scrambling skill, but it is deceptively tough — plenty of walkers are surprised by how much work a "small" Munro can be.

A brilliant Glasgow day

Ben Vane's position makes it one of the best short mountain days from the Central Belt, and it sits among fine neighbours — Beinn Ìme, Beinn Narnain and the rest of the Arrochar Alps. When to go and what to pack

Ben Vane is a rewarding walk from spring through autumn; under snow the steep, stepped ground becomes a proper winter climb needing an axe, crampons and the skills to use them. Carry warm layers, waterproofs, food and a map, and check the mountain forecast before you set off.
