The short answer: Ben Lomond. A made path all the way, a big car park at Rowardennan, no navigation puzzles in clear weather, 4–6 hours of honest work, and a summit panorama over Loch Lomond that explains the whole hobby in one look. It is the most-climbed first Munro in Scotland for good reasons, and it is an hour from Glasgow.
But "best first Munro" depends on where you live and what you want the day to feel like. Here are the alternatives we recommend most often.
If you want the shortest honest day: Schiehallion
Schiehallion in Perthshire is the tidy one — a single whaleback with an excellent path for two-thirds of the way (thank the John Muir Trust), a summit boulder field to keep it interesting, and 4–6 hours car to car. It also has the best story: the 1774 experiment to weigh the Earth happened on its slopes. Full guide here.
If you live north: Ben Wyvis
Inverness folk start on Ben Wyvis — a well-pathed approach through forestry onto a grand mossy whaleback, about 5–6 hours. The plateau needs care in mist, but on a clear day it is as friendly as big hills get. How to climb Ben Wyvis.
If you want maximum reward for effort: Ben Vane or The Cairnwell
Ben Vane is the shortest of the Arrochar Alps — steep, knobbly and fun, with Loch Lomond behind you all the way up. At Glenshee, The Cairnwell starts from a 650m car park and is the quickest tick in the book at 2–3 hours; pair it with its two neighbours for a three-Munro first day if the legs agree.
What makes a good first Munro
- A path you can trust. Navigation skills come later; your first day shouldn't depend on them.
- Escape options. Out-and-back routes let you turn around without drama.
- A forecast you've actually read. Summit weather is a different animal from the glen — check the summit forecast and recent walker-reported conditions the night before.
- Time to spare. Fit walkers' times in guidebooks are targets, not promises. Add a third.
Whichever you choose, log it — the first tick is the one that starts the round. The Munros app tracks all 282 with routes, live conditions and summit forecasts for each.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best Munro to start with?
Ben Lomond. It has a well-made path from a large car park, straightforward navigation, around 4–6 hours of honest effort, and one of the best summit views in Scotland — an hour from Glasgow. More first Munros are started and finished here than anywhere else.
What is the easiest Munro of all?
The Cairnwell at Glenshee is usually named the easiest — around 460m of ascent from a 650m-high car park, done in 2–3 hours. Easy is not the same as best: it is a ski-area hill. Schiehallion offers a better first-Munro experience for similar effort.
Can an unfit person climb a Munro?
Most reasonably active people can manage an easier Munro if they allow plenty of time. Expect 4–7 hours, 700–1,000m of climbing, and take the hill at your own pace. Our beginner fitness guide covers how to prepare.
