Munros Near Aberdeen
Aberdeen lies on the doorstep of some of Scotland's finest high mountain country. Royal Deeside stretches west from the city, leading directly into the Cairngorms — home to four of the five highest mountains in Scotland. Lochnagar, the Royal mountain above Balmoral, is less than 90 minutes away and one of the most dramatic peaks in the eastern Highlands.
The Cairngorms plateau — Ben Macdui, Braeriach, Cairn Toul — requires longer days and more planning, but no city gives better access to these high arctic peaks. The A93 through Braemar is the classic Aberdeenshire hillwalking corridor, with numerous Munros accessible from Glen Clunie and Glen Callater.
To the south, the Angus Glens offer good eastern Highland walking. Aberdeen is the natural base for anyone wanting to methodically work through the Cairngorms — Scotland's greatest mountain massif, with 64 Munros concentrated in a compact area.
